Tesla is building a huge solar project on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Kauai already did have solar panels, but these solar panels could only be used when the sun was shining, when demand was low. There is no possibility to store the energy, that is why the island still needed fossil fuels at night.
Tesla is solving the problem by creating batteries that store energy, which can be used at night. It is called the Tesla Powerpack, which will help Kauai reduce fossil fuel usage by 1.6 million gallons a year. The Kauai project consists of a 52 megawatt-hour battery installation plus a 13 megawatt SolarCity solar farm, consisting of 54,978 panels.
It’s the first major solar-plus-storage project for Tesla since its $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity last year, and Tesla said in a statement that it “will work with energy providers around the world seeking to overcome barriers in the way of building a sustainable, renewable energy grid of their own.”
