Elon Musk is working hard to make lives in congested cities easier. Not only is he working on plans to connect cities with the very innovative Hyperloop system, he is also working on plans to make transportation IN cities faster and more sustainable. The plan is to build a tunnel system. A network of urban transportation consisting of electric underground sleds on which you can put your car, making it possible to evade traffic jams with 125mph.
Last Friday Musk showed a sneak preview of his plans for the transportation network. This project was born in the mind of Musk duet to his frustration of gridlocks.
“Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging…” he wrote, following that up with another tweet saying, “I am actually going to do this.”
The first tunnels will be built in the Los Angeles area, starting Los Angeles International Airport to Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood and Sherman Oaks.Musk did not give much further details, such as a a timeline.
As said, for the longer range Musk is also working on Hyperloop, a magnetically levitating underground train that travels as fast as an airplane.
Musks testrun of the electric sled at 125mph
This is a test run of our electric sled that would transport cars at 125 mph (200 km/h) through the tunnels, automatically switching from one tunnel to the next. Would mean Westwood to LAX in 5 mins.
How does the tunnel system work?
In the video below you can see how the tunnel system works. You drive your car on a metal ‘skate’, which goed undergorund and automatically finds the right direction. In the meantime, the driver can sit down and relax.
