Dutch design: Ashtrays become charging stations

The Netherlands wants to be a smoke-free country by 2040. Therefore, as of October all Dutch train stations are smoke-free.

The Dutch railway management organisation ProRail came up with a green, healthy and environmentally friendly alternative to the smokers poles at the stations: a transformation into charging stations for e-bikes.

Smokers poles could until recently be found on every covered platform at train stations in the Netherlands.

A smoker pole is a two meter high ashtray around which smokers are allowed to smoke within a limited radius.

Less inconvenience for train travelers

With completely smoke-free stations, ProRail and railway company NS meet the wishes of the majority of the travelers, who experience nuisance from smoking fellow travelers. In this way ProRail and NS also make a contribution to strive for ‘a smoke-free generation by 2040’.

The Amsterdam producer of smart lighting systems Lightwell is responsible for its development and presented the charging station last October during the Dutch Design Week.
